He has tried to use the same parliamentary mechanism to push a bill through to get people to pay for NHS treatment, so it’s not an objection to the mechanism in principle, it’s that he’s an unpleasant individual!!

What I wonder is this. Is our lifestyle sustainable, not just environmentally, but financially, long term. Could any system deliver it, left or right, socialist or capitalist . Or is it just a huge Ponzi scam with a can being kicked down the road, that eventually someone somewhere sometime, is going to have to deal with.

Not really, imho. Nothing to do with capitalism vs socialism. Financial cost is simply a proxy for supply and demand of finite resources (broadly, obviously there are various distortions that come into this) and as population continues to increase and expectations of living standards rise, resources become ‘increasingly finite.’ Everyone can’t have everything.

Regarding medical treatment specifically, it is a significant problem for the NHS that many expect cutting edge treatment to be available to them whatever the cost/benefit reality, simply because it does exist.

I can’t understand why France doesn’t just arrest them and put them in a jail until they can be deported, is just due to the sheer numbers/cost? They are in France illegally, if they needed refuge then I’m sure France would be happy to process them and put them in a suitable french refugee camp. But if they refuse then they aren’t anything but illegal immigrants and should be treated like any other lawbreaker in a foreign land.

I don’t mind the idea of genuine short-term help to a small number of people who want it but what annoys me is the sense of entitlement they seem to think they have. We can’t have a situation where anyone living in a country with a bit of conflict rumbling on or with a government we’d consider a bit authoritarian to then effectively have a worldwide free travel pass to go settle in any country of their choosing and be treated to a free ride for life. It’s all very well offering help and aid and all the rest of it, but the sheer number of people who could in theory claim that status would be enough to overwhelm most of Europe, never mind the UK.

I’m no cook but it seems to me that curry evolved as a way of covering the taste of meat that was past its best before refrigeration. It also seems that you are not going to get the spices to infuse the meat by searing it and caramelising the outside, which is done in western meat cooking to seal in the moisture.

I hate to be “that guy”, but these two statements are quite incorrect. We sear the outside of meat before braising (in some recipes) to get the delicious flavours from the maillard reaction and it in no way “seals in” the juices, and there is no reason to believe that people used spices other than because they taste quite nice.

That said, marinating meat in oils or vinegars can help to prolong the life of your meat.

Deliberate “leak” with a pre-planned follow-up. The people offended were never going to vote for him and the people whose support he needs will be encouraged by his tone and the unusually well-prepared White House comment: “Certain Washington politicians choose to fight for foreign countries, but President Trump will always fight for the American people,”.

Anyway, the answer is obvious: the mass driver for emigration is the desire for a better life; the worse the life in your current country is, the better the USA (or any developed country) looks. That’s why not so many Norwegians, Swiss and Luxembourgers are willing to swap everything they have for a chance to work for minimum wage in Miami.
